Q: I have more of a request
than a question. Could you tell me where or how I may obtain copies of
by-laws for the state of Massachusetts (or the General Laws)?

A: If you’re
looking for the state condominium law (Chapter 183A of the
Massachusetts General Laws), you can:
- Purchase a copy from the State House
Bookstore
- Download a copy free of charge from
the state Legislature’s Web site (go to
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/ , click on General Laws at the
bottom of the page, then do a search for 183A.
- Contact the Community Associations
Institute of New England at 781-237-0920. If you’re a member, they
will send you a copy for free; if you’re not a member, they will
charge you copying costs plus postage.
If you are looking for the bylaws of a
specific condominium, you get those directly from that condominium.
The condominium association should make copies available to unit
owners; if you are a prospective buyer, ask the real estate broker or
the owner from whom you are purchasing the unit to obtain a copy for
you. And don’t buy any unit until you and/or your attorney have
reviewed all of the condominium documents – including the rules and
regulations and the Master Deed – as well as the bylaws.
